Are Subdomains New Websites in Google’s Eyes?

A subdomain looks like this:

  • blog.example.com
  • shop.example.com

Google treats subdomains as part of the same site in most cases. Subdomains, such as blog.yoursite.com, typically fall under yoursite.com, but not always. It depends on how the subdomain is used.

Google is sophisticated enough to understand if the subdomain functions independently. It uses signals such as shared design, content links, and templates to group them.

That flexibility is what makes the topic confusing.

How Google Sees Subdomains

From a technical perspective, each subdomain is its own entity. It can have its own content, structure, and signals. Because of that, Google can evaluate it separately.

However, Google also looks at context. If subdomains are clearly related and well-connected, they may share signals and be treated as part of a larger site.

In that case, they share the parent domain’s authority. For example, nytimes.com and blog.nytimes.com link closely and rank together.

When Subdomains Stay Connected

Subdomains can feel like part of the same site when:

  • content is closely related
  • internal links connect pages clearly
  • branding and structure are consistent

Here, search engines understand the relationship and may treat them as a unified presence.

What This Means for SEO

The choice of a subdomain is more than just a technical matter; it plays a crucial role in how your site develops in search visibility.

  • Subdomains offer flexibility regarding how connected they may be
  • They may require more effort to build authority
  • They work well for distinct sections or large scale projects
NOTE: For smaller or tightly connected content, keeping everything under one domain by using a subdirectory instead can be simpler.

Final Thought

Google does not follow a single rule for subdomains. It evaluates how they are used. Think of subdomains ad capable of being connected through structure but also capable of being separated serving different purposes. This balance is key to how they rank in search results.
